What is a Scan?
The 2021 RAM 1500 TRX deliveries have started which means we're getting busy over here. We were unable to get any early access, so our research starts now. Many people may not know, but the first step in creating anything for this truck is getting data. All our products are CAD designed, so we need the base truck to start with. Since we will be building TRX bumpers, a good place to outline this procedure would be on the front bumper.
2021 RAM TRX Bumpers
It starts with a baseline scan with the OEM bumper in place. For this, we use a precision scanner that turns a real life object into a 3d computer model. The scanner uses a laser line probe that can gather 1.2 million data points per second, giving us an extremely accurate model to work with.
Once the bumper-on scan has been completed, we remove the bumper and scan all mounting points along with anything that would be important for bumper fitment. Multiple scans get stitched together into one cohesive file that is our basis for product development.
2021 RAM TRX Parts
We don't stop at bumpers though. With a truck like this, we must take in as much as we possibly can. Rear bumpers, truck beds, and side steps all get scanned. The RAM 1500 TRX we have has most of the factory options, so OEM mounting solutions are documented in case we need to reference or use them. Now all that's left to do is start designing.
